What's the most annoying thing about your child?

Did the question have you smiling? Maybe crying inside. Running through your mind to sum up a few annoying things about your child(ren). As parents we spend hours with our babies and know their core, characters and behaviours (or at least understand it), so it's not a negative thing to have a list of things they do that make you want to go for a drive - in fact they could probably fill the answer in for you:

  • Mummy/daddy hates it when I chat back

  • When I say MUUU - MEEEE a million times

  • When I get paint on the walls

  • When I bring live animals into the house

  • When I sing too loud....

Where is this going?

Maybe the Einstein pic will give you a clue...

On a Friday night during a Youtube binge, we end up on TEDx talk given by Josh Shipp who explains these annoying traits could actually be the beginning of your child(ren)'s biggest talents, referencing Albert Einstein, Lonnie Johnson and Nancy Lublin, who despite being disqualified at school level as being either too experimental or unfocused and agitated and annoying - yes, they had teachers shaking their heads and telling their parents that their kid might not succeed in life. Take a look at their younger year pictures below - blank, until an adult in their life believed in them enough to redirect their obvious passions into something that they could take into their adult lives and turn into careers that changed their world and impacted those around them.

So instead of seeing the annoying 5 things mentioned before, maybe you could see:

  • My child is good at debating

  • Wow s/he's determined!

  • Should we invest in art? What an artist

  • They are curious about nature - let's explore science

  • Singing / drama/acting might help level things out

It's hard at first, but the talk ended with Josh saying that when you spot an annoying thing in your kid or something that looks like a set back - that is the point they need an adult to direct that energy towards the right direction.

Here is your updated gallery of the annoying kids (Albert Einstein, Lonnie Johnson and Nancy Lublin) fast forward decades post - school:

Let your kids stick out their tongue like Mr Einstein every now and then. If you have a moment take 15 mins to watch the TEDx Talk.
